Types Of Acne Treatment

Given the physical and social disturbance associated with acne it is natural for acne victims to wish the condition disappear in the twinkling of an eye. Unfortunately, this is not the case. No acne treatment can make the pimples vanish at once. Different methods of acne treatment aim to prevent the formation of new spots and scarring, and heal those that have already developed. Treatment is usually gradual and asks for patience.

Treating Acne At Home

You can treat your acne at home with over the counter lotions and other products. Home acne treatment will usually bring about improvement in several weeks. Spot-prone areas of the skin need to be kept clean so you should use a cleanser without fragrance or additives twice daily for cleansing. Most of the over the counter cleansers consist of benzoyl peroxide. It has an antibacterial character and causes the skin to go dry while removing its surface layer of dead cells. This prevents skin pores from getting blocked and hence helping to ease and heal the acne. Benzoyl peroxide can cause redness and peeling of the skin, especially in the initial period of use. Decreasing the frequency of use usually relieves the redness. In case home treatment of acne appears useless after several weeks, you need to consult your physician or a dermatologist.

Prescribed Acne Treatment

Physicians generally would treat mild acne cases with benzoyl peroxide. In case of severe acne, topical or oral medications would be prescribed. Topical medicines are rubbed onto the affected skin area while oral medicines are in tablet form.

Topical Medicines

A commonly used topical medicine is the azelaic acid which is available by the common name Skinoren. It does not cause soreness of the skin like benzoyl peroxide. Topical retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A, rubbed into the skin once or twice daily. These cause the outer layer of skin to flake off, thus opening up the follicles. Topical antibiotic lotions such as Dalacin T are used to control the acne-causing bacteria. Acne treatment with these lotions is usually prolonged, extending over a minimum of about six months. Some products combine antibiotics with other medications (like benzoyl peroxide).

Oral Medicines

Oral medicines are in form of tablets and contain antibiotics like tetracycline. They are usually prescribed for cases of acne with inflammation. Most of the oral medications require three to six months to show their healing effect. The success of oral medication has dropped gradually as the bacteria that cause acne keep evolving into new forms that are resistant to these oral antibiotics. Additionally, these oral antibiotics do not help opening up blocked pores which is the major cause of acne.
