Adult Acne, Free Radicals And Skin

Adult acne attacks a person in the adult years, caused mostly by the same bacteria as responsible for acne in juvenile years. In the case of adults, acne usually invades normal or combination skin, though it can also occur in dry skin, unlike juvenile acne that is more prevalent in people with oily skin.

Problem With Adult Acne

The fact that acne in adults involves normal, combination, or dry skin poses a problem for the adults seeking acne treatment because the common medicinal products are usually made for adolescents and young adults with oily skin. Their effect is drying the skin so their use by adults renders the skin excessively dry, prone to early aging, and overly sensitive.

Causes Of Adult Acne

Different factors can set the conditions required for acne attack. Stress is a main culprit. It does not directly cause acne but creates hormonal imbalance and weakens the immune system. Caffeine rich food (coffee, tea etc.) has also been known to produce cortisol, a steroid hormone that promotes acne in adults. Smoking and certain dietary habits like low intake of free fatty acids are some other causes partly responsible for acne in adult years. Another minor dietary factor is the use of milk or dairy products which contain natural hormones that promote acne. Some studies also link acne to heredity.

Adult Acne And Skin Aging

Early aging of the skin is a common case in adults suffering from acne. Due to acne, skin starts producing hydrogen per oxide, a chemical which causes the formation of free radicals. These chemical elements are also produced by the body’s processes of healing from infections and repairing of damaged tissues. In addition, free radicals are also generated by over exposure to sun. These radicals are the agents of premature skin aging associated with acne. While techniques and products have been developed for the skin to regain its youth to a large extent, acne needs to be treated first.

The Effect Of Benzoyl Peroxide

People who are suffering from skin aging on account of adult acne should beware of using benzoyl peroxide that is used as a cleansing agent. Benzoyl peroxide creates free radicals and its high concentration and frequent use make the skin age faster than before. More alarming is the finding that persistent use of benzoyl peroxide increases the risk of skin cancer. Due to these facts, the FDA has regarded the use of benzoyl peroxide as not completely safe.
