Adult Acne Treatment Procedures
Adults of all ages can and do suffer from acne. In adults, acne is more prevalent among women (50 %) than men (25 %). Due to the high prevalence of acne among adults, different adult acne treatment techniques have been developed by years of study and research. Medication Medication for adult acne includes cleansing agents and antibiotics in the form of topical creams and lotions, or antibiotic tablets. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, retin-a, accutane, erthythromyicin, doxycyline and tetracycline are some of the most commonly used medications for adult acne treatment. But treatment techniques other than medication are also in common practice, especially for more severe cases of the condition. Microdermabrasion This is a quick adult acne treatment technique usually requiring only one hour to complete with almost no recovery time. The technique essentially consists of breaking up dead skin cells by means of a fine crystal spray or removing the dead skin cells via a vacuum-type device. An hour of redness of the treated area follows the treatment. Microdermabrasion is useful in cases of mild acne scars but not for severe scarring. Pateints of advanced age and those having sensitive skin are usually not treated with this technique. Chemical Peeling Adult acne treatment by chemical peeling improves skin discoloration and age spots, light freckling and scarring, and light sun damage to the skin. The procedure consists of applying a chemical solution of known strength to acne-affected area of the skin to peel its outer layer of dead cells. For deep peeling, anesthesia is given. Chemical peeling stimulates the generation of new and healthy skin cells. After the treatment, exposure to sun is not allowed for up to two weeks. Redness, swelling, or formation of blisters may occur after the treatment so you need to have your skin checked for sensitivity to different chemical agents. Laser Skin Resurfacing Laser skin resurfacing is a rather new technique in adult acne treatment. It promises regaining the skin its youthful look without discomfort, bleeding, or bruising of the skin. By using a laser light, this technique can treat deeper skin layers than microdermabrasion. Localized anesthesia is given to the patient while treating the skin with laser. The laser light is moved over the skin areas to be treated. Layer of dead skin cells is thus removed and new cells can form with a healthy and young appearance. Mild swelling of skin and discomfort is usually experienced after laser resurfacing treatment. Cost Of Adult Acne Treatment Treatment costs vary for different acne cases depending on the severity of the condition and the duration of treatment period. On average, medications like antibiotics, topical creams, and lotions cost up to $200 a month. Hormone therapy costs nearly the same averaging a little above $200 per month. Procedures of skin resurfacing i.e. chemical peeling, laser scar treatment etc. can cost from $75 to several hundred dollars per session. On the average, daily skincare programs cost $700 to $1,500 per year.
