Why Does Acne Occur During Pregnancy?

If you’re pregnant, the last thing you probably thought you’d have to deal with is acne. But acne during pregnancy is actually quite common. Your body is undergoing immense hormonal changes during pregnancy, which is what causes the acne. This is the same reason that acne is so common during the teenage years, when children begin to take on adult hormones. The good news about pregnancy acne is that it’s temporary, and will generally subside when you’re pregnancy has come to its full term.

Dealing With Pregnancy Acne

Even though pregnancy acne is temporary, there are some things you can do to help control it. By all means, you should avoid taking oral medication for your acne, as this medication will have seriously detrimental effects on your baby. In fact, most oral medications require by law that any woman taking them is on birth control to ensure that no fetuses are harmed. So your best options to control your acne are topical solutions, like face washes, lotions and gels.

Pregnancy acne will probably not even last the duration of your nine months. Most women report pregnancy acne being the worst during their second trimester, but find relief in the third trimester. The “glow” of a pregnant woman is real, and you may find your skin healthier than ever as the due date of your baby approaches. Pregnancy acne is nothing to worry seriously about, and certainly does not suggest a skin problem that is there to stay. Just think of pregnancy acne as another sign that your baby is developing healthily, and your body is adjusting accordingly to all the physical changes of both you and your baby.

In addition to topical solutions, you can help acne by eating a well balanced diet, staying hydrated and getting enough rest. The better you take care of yourself during your pregnancy, the better off you and your baby will be. If you find that over the counter solutions aren’t effective in treating your pregnancy acne, talk to your gynecologist or dermatologist. Your gynecologist may be familiar with pregnancy acne and may be able to recommend treatment without you having to make a second trip to your dermatologist. But by all means, if you are more comfortable going straight to your dermatologist you should do so. Just make sure you address any possible side effects of treatment for your pregnancy acne to your baby.
